Sandy Health Centre

Sandy Health Centre is one of 2 GP surgeries in Sandy along with Shannon Court which is managed by the Saffron Health Partnership in Biggleswade.  Access to GP surgeries is a constant challenge and Richard ensures a regular dialogue with local surgeries as well as with their Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and with patients themselves through engagement at surgeries, town hall meetings and written correspondence.

As with other GP practices in the country, the NHS has mandated that from October 1st 2025, appointments must now be managed through a 'total triage' system which are intended to assess the clinical needs of patients contacting the surgery to evaluate the immediacy of care required and also the most suitable practitioner to deliver that care. In trials, total triage has been shown to streamline the appointments process and reduce the 8am telephone rush for appointments which often results in those fortunate enough to get through on the phone receiving an immediate appointment, and not necessarily those in the greatest clinical need.   For several month Sandy Health Centre has been gradually extending the use of the triage system - 'Klinik' and some constituents had communicated that they found the system cumbersome and time consuming to complete. During a visit in September 2025, Richard was encouraged to hear that the team is actively reviewing the system and exploring alternative platforms that should offer a more efficient and user-friendly experience. Improving digital access is a clear priority, and the team is also looking at ways to support patients who may struggle with online systems, ensuring no one is left behind as services evolve. During that visit Richard was pleased to meet the new practice manager and particularly welcomed the news that in most cases, patients are able to get a same-day appointment with a GP or clinician.
