beer duty

Earlier this week, Richard joined 67 other Conservative Members of Parliament and called for the Chancellor to cut beer duty in next week's Budget.

A copy of the letter to the Chancellor, which was organised by his colleague Richard Holden, can be found below.

Pubs and the hospitality sector have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic and although the Government has put in place a range of measures to support pubs, a cut in beer duty would aid their recovery as we pursue the Prime Minister's roadmap over the months ahead.

Britain pays more in beer duty each year than France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Ireland combined and with 80% of the beer drunk in this country also brewed here, the level of beer duty represents a tax on the UK supply chains and breweries too.

Speaking after signing the letter, Richard said: "I was pleased to sign this letter. The hospitality sector has been hit very hard by the pandemic and pre-pandemic, the level of beer duty was already too high. Now is the time to resolve this, to cut beer duty and support our pubs, which are often at the heart of our local communities, to recover."
