On Tuesday morning, the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, held a panicked emergency press conference because of damaging speculation ahead of the Budget on 26th November.
Later that morning in the House of Commons, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Richard Fuller MP, questioned the Chancellor. Part of the exchange can be watched at https://youtu.be/h3lqVExwtAE?si=FfVP9mszLx1snX_5
Speaking afterwards he said:
Today the Chancellor demonstrated an astonishing lack of self-awareness in blaming everything and everyone for her mismanagement of the economy.
Her speech was a masterclass in not accepting responsibility for the consequences of her own actions.
People have stopped listening to the Chancellor’s excuses : she needs to realise she is not a commentator on the country’s economic problems; she is the cause.
The Chancellor promised after her last Budget that she had ‘wiped the slate clean’ and was 'not coming back with…more taxes’. But now she is gearing up for another round of punishing tax hikes on hardworking families, breaking her promise.
But there is another way. The British public deserve a government with a plan and the backbone needed to cut spending and reduce welfare, delivering a stronger economy.
