Employment Figures

New figures published by the Office of National Statistics show there are a total of 33.09 million people in work in the UK – this is an increase of 382,000 people in the last year.

As jobs rise, vacancies are falling, with an unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent – near record lows, meaning the number of unemployed people in the UK has halved since 2010.

These new figures show the government is making progress in achieving its economic priorities with a strong workforce and a resilient economy.

Commenting, Richard Fuller MP said:

These are difficult times, with Britain’s economy shocked by Coronavirus and then impacted by Putin’s war in Ukraine. That is why the government has five priorities: halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists and stop the boats.

The latest jobs figures show we have more people in work than ever before. Since 2010 there are four million more people in work and the number of people out of work remains near record lows at 3.8 per cent. Getting record numbers of people into work not only grows the economy but also boosts people's health and wellbeing.

This  fifth month-on-month fall in economic inactivity is encouraging - and we have a clear plan to keep this trend going by equipping the over 50s to return to work; arming jobseekers with the skills they need though tailored training and extra work coach time; removing barriers for parents on Universal Credit and by rolling out new initiatives such as our Universal Support programme for those who are sick and disabled.
