Ukraine

On Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a statement to the House of Commons to update MPs on the UK's response to President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. His full statement can be read here.

The Prime Minister had spoken to President Zelenskyy earlier that morning and attended a meeting of G7 leaders delivering strong assurances of Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine.

Alongside our allies, the UK is imposing the largest and most severe package of sanctions that Russia has ever seen, hitting more than a hundred companies and oligarchs at the heart of the Russian economy with assets freezes worth many hundreds of billions of pounds, dealing a severe blow to Russia’s economy, hobbling Russia’s military-industrial complex and personally damaging Putin’s inner circle of corrupt oligarchs.

The Transport Secretary has also now signed restrictions prohibiting all scheduled Russian airlines from entering UK airspace and we have announced changes to visa concessions for Ukrainians in the UK, to provide certainty to our Ukrainian friends and colleagues living, working and studying here.

Richard Fuller MP said:

I welcome the package of severe sanctions we are imposing on Russia along with our allies.

We will continue to stand with Ukraine politically, economically and defensively in the face of this abhorrent assault on their sovereignty.

I think we now need to consider more financial resources for our national security.
