Last week, Minister for Vaccines and Public Health, Maggie Throup MP, announced 'Fit Miles', a new facet of the government's health incentive scheme to tackle obesity.
This scheme will be piloted for 6 months next year with users wearing wrist-worn devices to generate personalised health recommendations such as increasing daily step counts, eating more fruit and vegetables and reducing portion sizes. Users can earn points that could be traded for vouchers, discounts and gift cards.
Richard Fuller, MP for North East Bedfordshire, who spoke after the announcement, said:
Despite a generally warm reception in the House, I pointed out that there is growing public frustration with the government's obsessive use of 'nudging' people towards a preferred lifestyle.
I also reminded the Minister that the role of the NHS is to support life, and not the role of life to support the NHS.
