On Monday night, Richard Fuller MP spoke in the debate in the House of Commons to consider Lords Amendments to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

Speaking after the debate, he said:

In the House of Commons, I spoke out against the measures to restrict 'noisy protests' that are included in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

I highlighted that such measures are counter to the notion of freedom of speech which we cherish in this country, and furthermore that smaller, marginalised protest groups could be disproportionately affected as sometimes they have little more than noise to make their voices heard.

Finally, I questioned the unacceptable but inevitable consequence of making our police forces the arbiters of what constitutes an acceptable level of noise at a protest.

Richard's contribution to the debate can be watched here and read in Hansard here.
