Last week Richard opened the Bedfordshire Pass Wide and Slow Awareness Campaign Ride. Pass Wide and Slow is a campaign group that advocates for equestrian road safety and awareness to non-equestrians: https://passwideandslow.co.uk/ and these rides help raise awareness to non equestrians in the local area.
Richard Fuller MP said:
I was pleased to recently join Natasha and her horse Duchess at a "Pass Wide and Slow" campaign event in Podington.
According to The British Horse Society there have been 3,383 road incidents involving horses during calendar year 2023. 66 horses and 3 people have died as a result of those incidents with many others injured. Tellingly, in 85% of these occasions the cause was attributed to a vehicle passing by too closely or too quickly.
With North Bedfordshire having many country roads and also a large number of horse and pony owners, it is especially relevant for all of us to take extra care when driving in rural areas.
