Improving the way we regulate the regulators

During BEIS (Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy) parliamentary questions this week, Richard Fuller MP asked the Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department to look at ways to improve the way we regulate the regulators.

Speaking after the question, Richard said:

Investment is attracted to areas which have agile, pro-growth regulatory environments, and in this country much of our regulation is delegated to agencies.

The oversight and assessment of these regulatory agencies is generally weak in the UK so I asked the Minister to explore ways to improve the effectiveness of these processes.

Last week, Richard met again with the head of Firearms Licensing for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The signs are that the new processes and increased personnel are helping to reduce the backlog and speed up the process for new applications and renewals.
