Latest figures show that as of January 2021, there are a total of 123,813 doctors and 301,491 nurses - record numbers - working in the NHS in England.
Richard Fuller, Member of Parliament for North East Bedfordshire, said:
I am delighted to see there are more doctors and nurses working in the NHS than ever before, with over 123,000 doctors and 301,000 nurses across England, representing an increase of almost 6,600 more doctors and over 10,900 more nurses than last year; while applications to study nursing have risen by 34 per cent in the same period. These figures show we are on track to fulfil our manifesto pledge of providing 50,000 more nurses during the course of this Parliament.
As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, our expanding NHS workforce will help provide the world-class care patients deserve and continue to deliver the life-saving vaccines that will secure our path back to normality.
The government is committed to delivering 50,000 more NHS nurses by the end of this Parliament. There has also been a 34% increase in applicants to study nursing this year, with all eligible nursing, midwifery and allied-health professional students benefiting from a non-repayable grant from the government, worth at least £5,000 a year.
