Last week, Richard appeared on Sky News with Cathy Neman to discuss the Conservatives' announcements at Party Conference and they also spoke about the Triple Lock.
Richard Fuller MP said:
I am in no doubt that welfare needs to be reformed as anyone can see that this enormous drain on the public finances is not sustainable in the long term.
But I do not agree with may who have called for the triple lock to be scrapped. This mechanism has, and continues to play a critical role in redcucing pensioner poverty and those living off the state pension have little oportunity to seek employment to supplement their incomes if the pension becomes diminished in real terms.
Calls to get rid of the triple lock are knee-jerk responses that do not address the fundamental issues of an aging population and a declining work force. It is also worth noting that rather than provide some sort of economic magic bullet, the near-term savings from such a change would not be significant.
