Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield will now trigger a Labour leadership contest, during which the Government will be consumed by Labour’s internal politics rather than governing. Conservatives achieved an extraordinary victory in the Aberdeen South by-election – the first time the Conservative Party has gained a Westminster Parliamentary by-election in Scotland since 1967.
Richard Fuller MP said:
Last night, after the polls closed and before the votes were counted, I appeared on LBC to discuss the by-elections. Whilst we are not entirely clear what Andy Burnham's plans are, I think we are about to see what a real left wing Labour government looks like. This will punish hard working people who do the right thing. Just look at how Labour has increased welfare spending by £20 billion whilst increasing taxes on jobs and working people.
The Makerfield by-election was about one man’s job. Aberdeen South was about thousands of jobs in oil and gas across our country and the future of an entire city. The people of Aberdeen have sent a message on behalf of the whole country: energy security is national security. It is common sense to use our own oil and gas rather than imports; it is madness to make ourselves poorer and weaker. Congratulations to Douglas Lumsden, the new Member of Parliament for Aberdeen South.
