Biggleswade Train Station

From today, Monday 8 December, passengers at Biggleswade Railway Station will benefit from the long-awaited lifts and a footbridge, providing step-free access to all platforms.

Back in 2019, Biggleswade Railway Station was given approval by the last government for the Access for All (AfA) programme. Since January 2020, Richard has chaired regular meetings between stakeholders, including Biggleswade Town and Central Bedfordshire Councillors, Biggleswade Rail User Group, Beds Rail Access Network, and Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway to push for delivery.

The project was originally due to be completed by the end of 2023, but repeated delays have caused understandable frustration and challenges for rail users who rely on step-free access. Richard is pleased that Network Rail is reviewing how these projects are managed to improve future delivery. Work finally began in January 2025, and the station will now be fully accessible from today.

The upgrade includes two new lifts on both island platforms and a new bridge and walkway, creating step-free access from the station entrance to all platforms. Govia Thameslink Railway has advised it has requested funding from the Department for Transport to ensure the lifts are staffed and available from the first train to the last, with a decision expected soon.

Richard Fuller MP said:

I am delighted that Biggleswade Station finally has step-free access. This is a huge win for our community and will make a real difference to passengers. Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign.
