National Highways diversion map

National Highways will close lane 2 of the A1 southbound between Wyboston and Black Cat roundabout from 6am Saturday 27 to 8pm Sunday 28 September 2025 to resurface parts of the A1 southbound between Wyboston and Black Cat roundabout. During this time access from the A1 southbound to the A421 westbound will be closed.

A421 westbound traffic will be diverted onto the A1 southbound towards Sandy. Traffic wishing to use Bedford Road will loop back on the Sandy roundabout and on the A1 northbound towards the Black Cat roundabout. Traffic wishing to use the A421 westbound will take the A603 on Moggerhanger rejoining the A421 at Cardington Interchange.

National Highways are also installing new safety barriers and lighting on the A421 eastbound carriageway near to Black Cat roundabout. These works require closing the A421 eastbound between Renhold interchange and Black Cat roundabout and the A1 northbound between Tempsford and Wyboston overnight (9pm to 5am) from Monday 29th September to Thursday 4th October 2025, Monday 06 to Friday 10 October 2025 and a weekend closure from Friday 10 to Monday 13 October 2025. For the weekend closure, Anglian Water are connecting a new watermain on Nags Head Lane close to the A1 carriageway.

Traffic will be diverted as follows (see diversion map below and here):

  • off the A421 at the Cardington Interchange onto the A603 towards Sandy
  • at Sandy, traffic will take the A1 northbound to the Tempsford Interchange
  • before exiting onto St Neots Road and joining the A428 at St Neots
  • drivers will re-join the A1 northbound at the Wyboston junction
