This weekend National Highways are continuing their work to build a new culvert next to the A1 which will channel water away from the new road. To work safely, the A1 southbound will be closed between the Black Cat roundabout and Tempsford from 6am on Saturday 9th until 6am on Sunday 10th August 2025.

Traffic will be diverted off the A1 at Wyboston onto the A428 towards St Neots. Traffic will then head south along Barford Road and rejoin the A1 at Tempsford. Please share with anyone you know will be affected by this closure.

The National Highways project team are also holding an Online Information Event on Tuesday 12 August 6-7pm about the upcoming road layout changes at the Black Cat roundabout that will be in place from Monday 18 August when four new sections of road will open to traffic at the roundabout, linking in with the existing road network. This will change how vehicles travel through the junction.  At the event, National Highways will offer an overview of the road layout changes you can expect to see and answer any questions.

Construction of the new three-tiered Black Cat junction began in late 2023 and is expected to be completed by spring 2027. Upcoming traffic changes will allow work to begin on building key parts of the new A421 flyover and lowering the A1 carriageway. Excavation work will also start, creating space for A1 traffic to pass beneath the new junction.
