The East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) team have contacted Richard regarding work planned on the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme that will see traditional lineside signals replaced with signalling displayed inside the drivers’ cabs. This project is intended to enable more reliable journeys for passengers in the future and help deliver a greener railway.

Over the weekend of 30th November/1st December further testing will take place relating to the recently installed system between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin in Hertfordshire. This is to enable trains to use digital signalling on this route starting in late 2025.

As a result, there will be an impact on services for passengers travelling to and from London King’s Cross throughout Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December.

  • LNER will be operating a reduced service starting and terminating at St Neots or Peterborough. Rail replacement coaches will run between St Neots and Bedford, where customers can join Thameslink services to London St Pancras.
  • Hull Trains will be running a reduced train service of two trains in each direction which will divert and terminate in London St Pancras.
  • Lumo will operate a reduced service involving a non-stop rail replacement coach between London King’s Cross and Peterborough.
  • There will be no Grand Central services.
  • Thameslink and Great Northern services between London and Peterborough/King’s Lynn will be affected and various rail replacement bus services will be in place to ensure passengers can complete their journeys.

Further details can be found at the Great Northern website here: https://www.greatnorthernrail.com/ecdp

The next significant impact on passenger services will be in January 2025; further details about upcoming work can be found here.
