Upcoming A1 and A421 Westbound Closures

National Highways Diversion Map

This weekend, National Highways are lifting beams into place on a new bridge at Kelpie Marine over the A1 and this work will necessitate the full weekend closure of both the A421 westbound and A1 Northbound from 9pm Friday 6th to 5am Monday 9th February 2026:

The closures will affect the following roads: 

  • A1 northbound between Tempsford and Black Cat junction.
  • A421 westbound from Black Cat junction to Renhold .

If you are travelling during these times, please use the designated diversions and maps:

𝐀𝟏 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝:

  • exit A1 at Tempsford Interchange onto St Neots Road.
  • take A428 towards Wyboston.
  • rejoin A1 at Wyboston Interchange.

𝐀𝟒𝟐𝟏 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝:

  • continue South on A1.
  • take A603 towards Bedford.
  • rejoin A421 westbound at Cardington Interchange.

 

Next week, National Highways are also installing new street lighting, permanent signage, and CCTV on the A1 southbound.

In order to carry out these works, it will be necessary to close the A1 southbound between Wyboston and Tempsford overnight (9pm to 5am) from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th February 2026.

If you are travelling during these periods, please use the designated diversion route and map:

A1 Southbound:

  • exit A1 at Wyboston Interchange
  • take A428 towards St Neots
  • rejoin A1 at Tempsford Interchange
