The Home Office has written to inform Richard that they will be terminating the contract with The Sharnbrook Hotel as asylum accommodation and that it will cease being used by the middle of June 2026.
Richard Fuller MP said:
Despite the Labour Government’s manifesto commitment to end the use of hotels for migrants, the number of migrants housed in hotels is still higher than when the Conservative Government left office.
Whatever your view on immigration, most people will agree that continued use of hotels for housing migrants is not the right thing and I am pleased the Home Secretary is making this change.
After some initial anxiety, it was encouraging to see the local community in Sharnbrook come together with support in difficult circumstances. I am grateful to all local residents.
Ultimately, the best way to stop illegal crossings and the subsequent payments which have been spent on asylum accommodation is to deter people from coming to the UK illegally. We need to take a far more robust approach to border security to significantly reduce the costs of housing asylum seekers. This involves ensuring that anyone who comes to the UK illegally is removed within a week, supported by reforming the broader asylum system to make the changes necessary to remove people from the UK who are here illegally.
The plan set out at Conservative Party Conference is that once these policies are in place, the deterrent effect based on near-certain removal will cause small-boat crossings to drop rapidly to close to zero. As a result, we would then be able to end the use of asylum hotels and Houses in Multiple Occupation.
