Last week, Richard popped into Emmaus Village Carlton and enjoyed a tour with CEO, Donna-Louise Cobban, to see the progress on the major renovation underway in the Dom Gregory building and the significant improvements to the drop-off area.
Emmaus Village Carlton has 38 regular spaces and four move on options to support people who have experienced homelessness by providing a home for as long as they need it, full-time work opportunities in a social enterprise, and a strong sense of belonging. All companions (residents) work full time and there is work for everyone at the Home Store, Boutique, Bric a Brac shop, Bistro, warehouse, and site and maintenance teams, providing a setting where skills can be learned in a friendly atmosphere.

In addition to utilising the skills of companions, it was great to see so many Bedfordshire businesses being used on the renovations and I look forward to returning when all the building and decorating work is complete.
It's clear that since taking on the role at the turn of the year, Donna-Louise has made great strides in building on its legacy and taking Emmaus to the next level.
Emmaus Village Carlton is one of over 30 Emmaus communities across the UK supporting people who have experienced homelessness, and is the biggest homelessness accommodation provider in the borough of Bedford. Research shows that for every £1 invested in an Emmaus community, there is an £11 social, environmental and economic return, with savings to the benefits bill, health services and a reduction in crime.
