The extensive and prolonged flooding of the A421 in September 2024 caused major disruption for thousands of road users. It had been hoped that the upgraded pumping system installed earlier this year would prevent a similar incident from occurring again. However, National Highways has now confirmed that, even with the new equipment, it would still take five days to clear the volume of rainfall experienced during that event.
Mayor Tom Wootton has written to the Government calling for a robust drainage and pumping system to be installed on the A421, to ensure that the severe flooding experienced in 2024 is not repeated.
Richard Fuller MP said:
I support Mayor Tom Wootton’s call for a failsafe drainage and pumping system to be installed to ensure no repeat of last year’s unacceptable upheaval.
