Richard was recently contacted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and informed that there are 40 sites of Commonwealth War Graves in North Bedfordshire commemorating more than 200 people and he took up the invitation to visit one of the sites.
Speaking afterwards, Richard Fuller MP said:
Last Friday I visited the Drove Road Cemetery in Biggleswade and paid my respects to the 19 war dead who are commemorated there. This is a particularly poignant time as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden where over 11,500 British and Polish Airborne troops landed at Arnhem in September 1944 by parachute and gliders in an attempt to capture the important bridges over the Rhine in Arnhem. Almost 1,500 were killed in the fighting and over 6,000 were taken prisoner. Additionally, the RAF lost many aircraft and crews in the desperate attempts to sustain the isolated troops in the days following the ill-fated initial incursion.
