The Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed that public sector borrowing in February 2026 was the highest on record for that month outside the pandemic.

Richard Fuller, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury commented:

Government borrowing jumped to £14.3bn in February - £7bn more than forecast.

The Government’s irresponsible choices to hike taxes to a record high and debt levels not seen since the 1960s is pushing more of the burden onto future taxpayers and leaving us unprepared to weather external shocks.

We need to start living within our means.
