Richard recently signed an open letter to the Energy Secretary calling on the Government to ensure that rural off-grid households are able to decarbonise in an affordable and easy way by incentivising the take up of renewable liquid fuels.
This follows a letter Richard sent to the Treasury earlier this year to consider a reduction in duties on renewable home heating oil. Over the last year, Richard has been campaigning to ensure that the government introduces changes to make renewable liquid heating fuel a more viable source of heating for people whose homes are not connected to the gas energy grid. Decarbonising the way we heat our buildings, including buildings off the gas grid, is essential for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. The government consulted in 2021 on phasing out the installation of fossil fuel heating systems off the gas grid from 2026. However, having listened to the public's concerns around the pace and cost of decarbonising off gas grid households, last year Rishi Sunak announced he was protecting households by pushing back the end date for new and replacement oil, LPG and coal heating installations in England to 2035. The government has also increased the support available to those wishing to install heat pumps under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to £7,500, ensuring families feel supported, not forced, to make changes that are right for them. £1.5bn additional funding for the BUS across three years (2025-2028) was also announced.
