Last week, Richard was on BBC's Politics Live with Ellie Reeves MP, Chair of the Labour Party.
Richard Fuller said:
We discussed 2 main areas; firstly the situation in Ukraine and the broad concensus between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition on the need for a security guarantee from the US if British troops were to be deployed as part of a peace-keeping initiative.
I believe we can still rely on the US military as part of the NATO alliance, however there is no question that President Trump's America First strategy has created an imbalance between the national interests being pursued in the US compared to UK and Europe. It is right that European nations are stepping up defence spending and taking greater responsibility for our collective security, but the change from an over-reliance on the US will take a period of adjustment and is disconcerting to many at present.
There was less unanimity of agreement during the second part of the discusion when we moved on to the Spring Fiscal Statement and the expected measures that the Chancellor will have to introduce.
Let's be absolutely clear that the reason the Chancellor will be coming back for more - more taxes and/or severe spending cuts - is because she made such a mess of her October budget when she collapsed business confidence and torpedoed the economy. It's becoming laughable how Labour politicians continue to pedal the discredited myth about a £22 billion black hole and use this to somehow mask their fiscal incompetence. By splurging on public sector pay, increasing debt through extra borrowing and destroying productive private sector businesses through eye-watering tax rises, Labour have wrecked the economy and sadly, we will all pay a long and painful price.
