ONS figures released on Friday showed there was no GDP growth in January 2026.
Richard Fuller MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury said:
Today’s figures from the ONS show the UK economy saw no growth in January and that was before the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.
Inflation is also higher than when Labour came into office.
For families across the country this means fewer job opportunities and slower wage growth. But while incomes stall, the price of the weekly shop and filling the car keeps going up leaving household budgets struggling.
It also means the Government collects less in tax, making it harder to keep up with demand for essential public services like our schools and the NHS.
The result? Living standards falling behind while families are asked to pay more. These are the consequences of Rachel Reeves’ punishing choices of the Jobs Tax and Fuel Tax over welfare cuts and we are all feeling the pain.
