A1 northbound diversion

National Highways will close the A1 northbound between Tempsford and Black Cat roundabout from 6am Saturday 11 January to 8pm Sunday 12 January 2025 to carry out utility work.

They will divert A1 northbound road users off the A1 at Tempsford to continue north on Barford Road. Road users will then head west on the A428 via St Neots and rejoin the A1 northbound at Wyboston, estimating an additional journey time of 10 minutes.

Full details about the Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement project can be seen at the National Highways website here.

Richard has also been informed about upcoming maintenance work planned for the section of the A421 between the A603 (Cardington Road) / A421 Roundabout and the Black Cat Roundabout. This work is planned to complete over two weeks, between Monday 13th January and Saturday 25th January 2025. Work will be between 8pm and 6am, on weeknights only, weather conditions permitting.

To complete the work safely, the A421 eastbound will be closed between the A603 / A421 Roundabout and the Black Cat Roundabout. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place as follows:

  • Traffic will exit the A421 at the A603 / A421 Roundabout, taking the 4th exit onto the A603.
  • Follow the A603 (Bedford / Sandy Road) to Sandy Roundabout.
  • At Sandy Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A1 and continue to the Black Cat Roundabout to rejoin and continue your journey.
