This weekend National Highways are carrying out construction work close to the carriageway on the new A421 to A1 eastbound free-flow link and  A421 westbound slip road.

To carry out this work safely, the following closures will be in place on the A421 from 9pm Friday 25th to 5am Monday 28th July 2025:

  • A421 eastbound between Cardington Interchange and Black Cat roundabout.
  • A421 westbound between Black Cat roundabout and Renhold Interchange.
  • Access to Bedford Road from the A1 southbound will also be closed.

Diversion (see map below)

  • Traffic will be diverted eastbound traffic off the A421 at Cardington Interchange onto the A603.
  • From there traffic will take the A603 before turning onto the A1 northbound towards Black Cat roundabout at Sandy.
  • Westbound traffic will use the same route in reverse.

Richard Fuller MP said:

Given the unacceptable delays experienced during road closures earlier this month, it is with some trepidation that I share this news. Fingers crossed for a smooth and trouble free weekend and please let me know how you find things if you are driving on these roads this weekend.
