National Highways are warning that there will be significant road closures covering the A1 and A421 from 9pm on Friday August 15th until 5am on Monday August 18th. Despite diversions being in place there is an expectation that such extensive closures will lead to substantial disruption and motorists should avoid the area if at all possible.
The closures are as follow:
- Full road closure between Tempsford and Wyboston on the A1 northbound.
- The A421 eastbound from Cardington A603 junction.
- The A421 westbound from Black Cat to Renhold.
- Bedford Road from Roxton past the Garden Centre entrance. Roxton Garden Centre will be open as normal throughout this period.
For those having to travel on these roads, the diversions in place will be as follow:
- A421 at the Cardington Interchange onto the A603 towards Sandy.
- At Sandy, traffic will take the A1 northbound to the Tempsford Interchange before exiting onto St Neots Road and joining the A428 at St Neots.
- Traffic will re-join the A1 northbound at the Wyboston junction.
- The A1 southbound will remain open during this period.
You can view the road closures and diversion map between 15-18 August here.
From Monday 18th August, there will be three new sections of road at Black Cat roundabout, linking in with the existing road network. These are:
- A421 eastbound to A1 northbound free-flow link
- A421 westbound on-slip
- Realigned Bedford Road
- A421 eastbound traffic will no longer approach the Black Cat roundabout, instead taking the single-lane free-flow link directly onto the A1 northbound.
- The northern section of Black Cat roundabout will remain closed restricting movement from the A421 onto the A1 southbound.
- The A1 northbound and A1 southbound approaches to the Black Cat roundabout will remain unchanged.
