Labour votes to continue with Northern Ireland Troubles Bill after King's Speech

On Monday night, Labour MPs voted to continue with the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, opening the door to elderly veterans being dragged into courtrooms decades after they served.

Richard Fuller MP said:

This week, Labour voted to put our British Army veterans back in the dock for the crime of serving their country. These are people who risked their lives to protect others, to defend our nation and to keep the peace.

Putting elderly veterans through fresh legal battles at the end of their lives is wrong at every level, yet that’s exactly what Labour’s Northern Ireland Troubles Bill will do.

In government we passed laws to protect our veterans and this week, Conservative MPs voted to block this Bill and we won’t give up the fight.  We will oppose Keir Starmer and Labour every step of the way. And when we get back into Government, we’ll scrap the Troubles Bill and restore full legislative protections for our veterans. We will protect those who protected us.

Labour has now very clearly opened the door to lawfare and politically motivated, vexatious claims that risk dragging elderly veterans into court rooms. Britain should stand behind its veterans, not put them on trial decades later.  If you agree, sign the petition at BackOurVeterans.com

As a lawyer, Keir Starmer worker alongside Phil Shiner, a disgraced lawyer who hounded British soldiers through the courts. Labour’s Northern Ireland Troubles bill could do the same, dragging veterans into court decades after their service. The Conservatives have held Labour to account at every stage of this Bill, supporting our armed forces by protecting them from vexatious legal cases.

Earlier this year, Richard invited The Rt Hon David Davis MP to meet with Biggleswade Veterans to talk about the Government's disgraceful plans. You can read more here.
