Ofwat has launched a consultation on proposals to ensure water companies involve consumers and listen to their views in key decisions that have a material impact on them, including those relating to water supplies and sewerage services. It is hoped that this will lead to better outcomes for people and communities, and help to rebuild public trust in the water sector.

Research shows that consumers see a role for the public to effect change in the water sector and want to hold companies accountable where they perform poorly and have the greatest direct impact on the public or environment.

Following the publication of the Independent Water Commission final report, the UK government has set out a new direction for the water sector with the formation of a new regulator in England. This marks an opportunity to reset the sector, to deliver better outcomes for customers and the environment.

The consultation runs until October 1st 2025 with an aim for new arrangements to come into force on 1st April 2026 for incumbent water companies and on 1st April 2027 for new appointees.

You can access the consultation document here.
