Emergency Test Alerts

The UK's Emergency Alerts System will be tested on Sunday, September 7th at around 3pm.

The Emergency Alerts system is a vital tool that allows the government and emergency services to communicate life saving information to local communities.

The system has already been used effectively in five emergency situations, including during major storms when lives were at risk. This is the second ever national test, following the first held in April 2023. Similar to regular fire alarm tests conducted by businesses, the test helps ensure the system works effectively when it is most needed. This is in line with other countries, including Japan and the United States of America.

Achieving high awareness of the test is important for public safety. This includes protecting domestic violence survivors who may have a concealed phone and so may wish to disable emergency alerts on that phone and giving advance notice to people operating heavy machinery.
